(hanging scroll, c. 1764)

Oni is a kind of yōkai, demon, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads. Stereotypically, they are conceived of as red, blue or white-colored, wearing loincloths of tiger pelt, and carrying iron kanabō clubs. This is a symbol of the dark side.

They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theatre.

The oni appearing in the Ganbare Goemon series in particular are akaoni, or "red oni".

Description[]

Onis are large demon-like monsters who carry a big stick and are not afraid to hit anyone who gets in their way. Onis live in tribes and they appear on the beach, pouring out of huts when they hear someone foolish enough to pass through their territory. They continue to pour out, so the best advice is to clear a path for Goemon and get him out of the way as soon as possible.
